And the Miss Ran Away With the Rake: Rhymes With Love

And The Miss Ran Away With The Rake - Elizabeth Boyle I have a few go-to storylines that I just adore in any incarnation and one of my absolute favorites is the plot of two characters falling in love through correspondences. I guess I’m a sucker for knowing the hero and heroine are perfect for one another if they could only see it out in the real world and then watching them have that epiphany for themselves. If you’re familiar with the films The Shop Around the Corner or You’ve Got Mail, then you already know the basic premise for And the Miss Ran Away with the Rake, but there are enough little changes to the story to make this a fun read.

Lord Harry Seldon and Miss Daphne Dale are very mindful of their positions within their respective families, taking pride in being the dutiful and practical ones while their relations seem to lead very scandalous lives. In fact, it is someone else’s tomfoolery that brings Harry and Daphne together. While on a drunken night out, Harry’s nephew Lord Preston submits an advertisement to the London Times for a “sensible” woman for Harry. The response is overwhelming, but Harry is more incensed by his nephew’s actions and has the lot of the letters destroyed. It is only by chance that one letter survives the purge and Harry is intrigued by the words written by a Miss Spooner. Thus begins a six week courtship by post between Miss Spooner and Mr. Dishforth, with both Daphne and Harry finding great joy in writing letters to someone who shares so many of their own passions. Everything leads to the one letter that will change both of their lives forever; an invitation to finally meet face to face.
