The Window Seat on a Rainy Day

In Protector, author Nancy Northcott delves a little deeper into the magic, rituals and dangers that surround the mages of Southeastern Georgia. This one-off from her debut story Renegade tells the story of two brand new characters who make their livings risking it all for others, yet neither one seems to find the strength within to take that same risk for their heart’s desire.

Edie Lang is a member of a Wyoming hotshot crew assisting the firefighting efforts within the Okefenokee Swamp, an area of Georgia governed by the Southeastern Shire Collegium. On top of her knowledge of wildfire suppression, Edie is a medic trained to work with the Helitack crews to fly into inaccessible areas within a fire to rescue injured firefighters. Her current assignment puts her into direct contact with pilot Josh Campbell, a man she hadn’t expected to meet again. Their working relationship is strained to the breaking point because of an intimate moment shared between them years before, with Josh disappearing afterwards without an explanation or good-bye.
