The Window Seat on a Rainy Day

To me, there is nothing better than finding a strong new series to glom. They are few and far between - the really good ones - but when I find it, I go totally fan girl. I just discovered the Sentinel Wars series by Shannon K. Butcher and yup - you guessed it. I am hooked!

In this first book, we get a lot of world building that works around the story of Drake and Helen. Drake is a Sentinel - more specifically a Theronai warrior. He and his brother tirelessly work to protect humanity from the demons that come out at night to feed and attack. So...where did he come from? Long story short, he is the descendant of aliens. But not ones from space, ones from an alternate dimension. And these males have the ability to channel energy. Unfortunately, the energy they channel builds up without a conduit to release the energy. The conduits are the women. Women Theronai can bond with the males and when they do, they can produce magic and use the males energy. This helps the males through the release and the females through empowering them. But each male has one female who can complete him and since all the females are dead, these men are the last of their kind and barely hanging on. In fact, their souls are dying from the energy build up and most of the males have only a few leaves left on their life mark tree.

A book about a caveman where there is little to no dialogue between said caveman and his time traveling mate.... Yeah, I paused, too.  But eventually, I got sucked in by the buzz that this unique book was getting and just had to see for myself.

Ehd is a caveman who has lost his whole tribe.  They all died in a fire and for many seasons he is barely surviving on his own.  And I mean on his OWN.  He is barely able to get food together and when he does, the canine predators come and he has to abandon his kill.  Ehd is not able to communicate.  He can't speak.  At all.  He doesn't just have a language barrier, he is incapable of making sounds and communicating with words.  Despite this, Ehd is clearly a pretty intelligent and resourceful guy.  When he comes upon a female in his animal trap, he decides - he is alone, she is alone, she must want to be his mate.  So he takes her home to his cave where she promptly has a nervous breakdown and cries - for hours.  Ehd, good guy that he is, figures his mate is upset with the accommodations that he has provided and vows to himself that he will make his mate happy and give her anything that she wants.  Like I said, he is a nice guy...

This is book three and the conclusion of Nova Reed and Quinton Carter’s journey that Jessica Sorensen has created. It has been a long, heart-wrenching tale filled with struggle and most importantly love. For once both Nova and Quinton are getting a clean slate and learning to deal with life is at the heart of this book.

Carter Reed was last read heading to rehab. He was literally saved by Nova and his father who showed him that he was worth something. Now clean and ready for release, he is on shaky ground. Moving back into his childhood home with a father he has little relationship with has him on edge. He had an amazing support staff of counselors to get him through the day, but more than anything he has Nova, not matter how far away she is.
