The Window Seat on a Rainy Day

Because there is nothing better than a good book and a comfy nook on a rainy day!

Shannon K. Butcher - Burning Alive

Burning Alive - Shannon K. Butcher

To me, there is nothing better than finding a strong new series to glom. They are few and far between - the really good ones - but when I find it, I go totally fan girl. I just discovered the Sentinel Wars series by Shannon K. Butcher and yup - you guessed it. I am hooked!

In this first book, we get a lot of world building that works around the story of Drake and Helen. Drake is a Sentinel - more specifically a Theronai warrior. He and his brother tirelessly work to protect humanity from the demons that come out at night to feed and attack. So...where did he come from? Long story short, he is the descendant of aliens. But not ones from space, ones from an alternate dimension. And these males have the ability to channel energy. Unfortunately, the energy they channel builds up without a conduit to release the energy. The conduits are the women. Women Theronai can bond with the males and when they do, they can produce magic and use the males energy. This helps the males through the release and the females through empowering them. But each male has one female who can complete him and since all the females are dead, these men are the last of their kind and barely hanging on. In fact, their souls are dying from the energy build up and most of the males have only a few leaves left on their life mark tree.

Shay Savage - Transcendence

Transcendence - Shay Savage

A book about a caveman where there is little to no dialogue between said caveman and his time traveling mate.... Yeah, I paused, too.  But eventually, I got sucked in by the buzz that this unique book was getting and just had to see for myself.

Ehd is a caveman who has lost his whole tribe.  They all died in a fire and for many seasons he is barely surviving on his own.  And I mean on his OWN.  He is barely able to get food together and when he does, the canine predators come and he has to abandon his kill.  Ehd is not able to communicate.  He can't speak.  At all.  He doesn't just have a language barrier, he is incapable of making sounds and communicating with words.  Despite this, Ehd is clearly a pretty intelligent and resourceful guy.  When he comes upon a female in his animal trap, he decides - he is alone, she is alone, she must want to be his mate.  So he takes her home to his cave where she promptly has a nervous breakdown and cries - for hours.  Ehd, good guy that he is, figures his mate is upset with the accommodations that he has provided and vows to himself that he will make his mate happy and give her anything that she wants.  Like I said, he is a nice guy...

Jessica Sorenson - Nova and Quinton: No Regrets

Nova and Quinton: No Regrets - Jessica Sorensen

This is book three and the conclusion of Nova Reed and Quinton Carter’s journey that Jessica Sorensen has created. It has been a long, heart-wrenching tale filled with struggle and most importantly love. For once both Nova and Quinton are getting a clean slate and learning to deal with life is at the heart of this book.

Carter Reed was last read heading to rehab. He was literally saved by Nova and his father who showed him that he was worth something. Now clean and ready for release, he is on shaky ground. Moving back into his childhood home with a father he has little relationship with has him on edge. He had an amazing support staff of counselors to get him through the day, but more than anything he has Nova, not matter how far away she is.

The Will - Kristen Ashley

The Will begins Kristen Ashely’s new romance series set in the fictional town of Magdalene, Maine. It has a small town setting with a return of the normal character types we have become accustomed to with Ashely. As in previous series, The Will introduces a rough dominant alpha with a huge heart, yet this book also brings a smart, sassy and independent female lead whose time in Maine brings her more home than ever imagined.

This is the story of Josephine, Josie, Malone and her unbreakable connection to her grandmother, Lydia Malone. Josie has lived a life of self-made success, yet a life of solitude. Her only constant was the love and support from her grandmother. Returning to Magdalene and her family home, Lavender House, is not for pleasure but to say goodbye to her only family. Unbeknownst to Josie, her grandmother’s love was also shared locally, especially on local boxer Jake Spear and his children. This man has spent seven years actively a part of Lydia’s family, yet never once meeting Josie. While Josie was living a busy life immersed in haute couture, Jake was continuing to open his heart and home to the wrong women, thus leaving him a single dad of three kids, yet completely alone.

Shield of Winter (A Psy/Changeling Novel)

Shield of Winter - Nalini Singh Awesome! Many favorite characters appearing in this one. Full review to come...

Prince's Fire: The Hearts and Thrones Series

Prince's Fire: The Hearts and Thrones Series - Amy Raby For some reason, reading the books in the Hearts and Thrones series reminds me of a science fiction story. I have no idea why - there is really no reason for it. And yet, whenever I read it, that is the feeling that I get.

Celeste is an Imperial Princess with a genius for mathematics. As the emperor's sister, she has no expectation of a marriage for love. Her father was a cruel tyrant and she is shy and retiring. She knows that she will have to marry someone who her brother chooses based on a political alliance. Their country is recovering from years of war caused by her father and having a young princess that can be offered in marriage is too politically convenient for her brother to pass up. When trade negotiations begin with the Inyan prince, Celeste's brother Lucien is willing to trade more than just goods. He wants to trade his sister's hand in marriage and the Inyan prince and fire mage is the best prospect around.

The King: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

The King - J.R. Ward After the ridiculously cold and snowy winter we have had here in the North East, one would think the thing I looked forward to most in those cold, dreary March days was spring... Nope, it was the annual Black Dagger Brotherhood frenzy that accompanies the latest release in the series. And this year, the series took a new turn by going back to a beloved couple - Wrath and Beth, the King and Queen of the vampire race. Due to the much anticipated nature of this book, beware of spoilers in the review. There are no major ones, as always. However, things can be hinted at and I wanted to give fair warning so that no one would be disappointed if they gleaned something they didn't want to from the review.

The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs)

The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell - Paula Quinn At first, I didn't plan to read and review this book, but to only participate in the blog tour. For me, Historicals aren't as appealing as they once were and I just wasn't in the mood. Then I realized who the book was about and I knew I just had to read it!

This book is the first in a new series by Paula Quinn that branches off of both her two previous Highlander series. Each series deals with a different generation of the same family and in this one, we get the adopted son of Colin from Conquered by a Highlander. Edmund MacGregor is a Scottish patriot determined to do whatever he must to keep Scotland from English tyranny. Like his father and uncles before him, he is determined to do his part in the fight. When he and his cousins come up with a plan to kidnap the one woman who was the fiancee of the chancellor, they figured they would be able to stop the passage of a law that would subjugate Scotland to the English. But Edmund never imagined that the plot would lead to much more for him.

Bite Me

Bite Me - Shelly Laurenston It always amazes me when an author has two consistent series - how different the two can still be! This is the case with Shelly Laurenston's two series The Pride and the Dragon Kin.

In the latest addition to The Pride series, we have the story of a honey badger. Livy Kowalski is a badger and they have a few...quirks. They consume venom, they like to burrow, they steal, and in Livy's case, they tend to take over territory that is not their own. Though a respected photographer, Livy has slowly lost her edge. She has gone from artist, to sports photographer to the dreaded wedding photographer. When Livy's life starts to fall apart at the seams, she goes to the one place that she thinks she can be alone - to the home of her "acquaintance" Vic. Of course, she is welcome there to Vic because he thinks the two of them are friends, but to Livy, his home is just like any other. It has cabinets for her to burrow in and a significant supply of honey. So to her, when Vic isn't there at least, it is the perfect hideaway.

Willing Sacrifice: The Sentinel Wars

Willing Sacrifice - Shannon K. Butcher Since the second book of the Sentinel Wars series, I have been looking forward to the story of Grace and Torr. I was sure that the fact that the two were separated by a variety of uncontrollable circumstances - including memory loss - would ensure that this story still had a lot of plot and tension. Unfortunately, somewhere along the lines, I am ending up disappointed...

Grace is a human that was living among the Theronai after a demon attack on her family. She is determined to care for Torr, the Theronai warrior that was paralyzed by demon poison while saving her brother's life. As the Sentinel Wars series opens, Grace and Torr are already mostly in love. Theirs is a gentle love of caring and compassion as Grace nurses the warrior and gives him a reason to live. Along the way, Grace decides to make the ultimate sacrifice. She gives Torr her health and vitality through the use of a pair of magical disks. While Torr regains his mobility - and is anxious to share his miracle with the love of his life - Grace is forced into the hell that was Torr's existence. Only, as a human, Grace is unlikely to survive the poison that was paralyzing Torr.

Some Like It Wild (The Wild Ones, #2)

Some Like It Wild (The Wild Ones, #2) - M. Leighton M Leighton has yet to write a book in which I disliked the characters. It is in this Wild Ones series that she introduced Trick and had women swooning for his sweet and sexy southern charm. Knowing that this series was moving forward and bringing more southern sex appeal had me at the peak of anticipation.

Some Like it Wild introduces Laney Holt, the small town good girl. She is the stereotypical preacher’s daughter looking for a good life with a good man all while wanting so desperately to always do the right thing. It does seem however that deep down she may be having some feelings of wanting just bust out of her comfort zone. Jake Theopolis is way too far out of that comfort zone as the older, more "seasoned" town bad boy. But one hot summer night, a chance to steal some peach wine, and a kissing booth sets the scene for good to meet bad. Too bad life puts Laney and Jake on different paths to success, never to have that second kiss.

Maybe Someday

Maybe Someday - Colleen Hoover Colleen Hoover has done it again! She has written a story so unique, so genius, and so completely beautiful. She has written a romance full of emotion and she has done it through two characters whose connection is so much more than mushy words and crude sex scenes. Maybe Someday brings passion to its readers on a palpable level.

For Sydney Blake, life approaching 22 seems to be pretty good. She is a college student enjoying her love of music through her major. She is living with her best friend and she has an amazing boyfriend to keep her warm at night. It takes years to develop lasting relationships in life, but it takes just seconds for Sydney to lose it all when her bestie and boyfriend are caught together.

Illusion: Chronicles of Nick

Illusion - Sherrilyn Kenyon If you are a fan of the Dark Hunters, and have resisted the pull of The Chronicles of Nick, let me tell you it is time to start reading Infinity - because the two series have started to overlap and the latest release, Illusion, is one no Dark Hunter fan should resist!

Now, this book has soooooo many secrets revealed - both for the world of The Chronicles of Nick and the Dark Hunter world, that I must put a spoiler warning on this review - even though I won't reveal any secrets and talk around the plot. So consider yourself warned. This review is also a little different because this book, I read with my son and I will share his thoughts and opinions as well. He usually "reads" The Chronicles of Nick on audiobook - he is a huge Holter Graham fan - so we read this together since at 9, this can be a little over his head in terms of the need to concentrate on the reading. The language isn't the problem, it is the sustained concentration that the stories require that I would say for reading, it is at a typical 5th grade level at least, though the content will keep even adults engaged. So, you have been warned - proceed at your own risk for VAGUE spoilers! :)

Sword of Darkness (Lords of Avalon, Book 1)

Sword of Darkness - Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kinley MacGregor If you are a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon, you may have come across the name Kinley MacGregor. That is because Kinley MacGregor is a pen name for the prolific author and one other reason why I love her! :)

In Sword of Darkness, we get a look at Camelot - after Arthur. Now, Camelot is taken over by Morgen and the Kerrigan. They rule as the Queen of the Fey and King of the Damned. They are in a constant battle with the Lords of Avalon who are trying to retake Camelot. The fearless leader of the Lords is the Merlin. When the last of the Merlin bloodline, Seren, is discovered, the Lords rush to protect her only to be foiled as she instead meets the Kerrigan. A dark and sinister knight who has pledged his soul to become a demon. His dark magic is frightening for Seren, but the pain and vulnerability that she sees in his eyes is compelling and soon the young weaver's apprentice is looking at Kerrigan not as a jailor or enemy, but as her protector.

Rock It (Rule Breakers #1) - Jennifer Chance This is my first time reading Jennifer Chance, and anything rock star related is usually a sure bet insta-love for me. This however did not quite live up to the expectations I had, especially when looking at its fabulous cover.

The story is that of Lacy Dawes a major fangirl of rock God, Dante Falcone. She has truly been his number one fan for over seven years, even completing fifteen filled scrapbooks dedicated to him and him alone. Now all grown up and working in the music industry, she lands in her own life dream heading his new promotional tour. Lacey is surrounded by lights, camera crews, and groupies, yet she is completely immersed in everything Dante. He on the other hand is a true rock star, enjoying the success, yet yearning to just play music. Their time together is filled with tension and lusty moments. Both decide to “make out” and get it out of the way so they can work together, however one kiss has both wanting more. For Dante he feels a connection with Lacey and a sense that she is different, for her on the other hand, well, she is finally living out her life’s fantasy.

Cry Wolf (Alpha and Omega Series #1)

Cry Wolf (Alpha & Omega #1) - Holter Graham, Patricia Briggs I have come to accept that, if Holter Graham wanted to read me advanced molecular physics, I would happily listen to him. He is THAT good of a narrator. Or, it could be that he just does a stellar job of picking the right projects to work on. Either way, I thoroughly enjoy most his audiobooks.

Anna is a newly Change werewolf whose pack has broken the rules. They Changed her without her consent and they have essentially abused her for the last three years. Anna is something unique in the world of pack hierarchy. She is a rare and precious Omega wolf and as such, her pack has been taking advantage of her and her skills without her even knowing it was happening. Until the werewolf leader, Bran, sends his son Charles in to investigate the Pack's misconduct. Soon, Charles and Anna are on a hunt for a killer, are out to change Pack politics, but most of all, they are realizing that they are mates. Due to the abuse that Anna has suffered at the hands of her pack, Charles knows that he needs to take things slow. But his wolf will only go so slow and the hunt is on for his mate.
