What An Earl Wants (Hqn)

What an Earl Wants - Kasey Michaels One of the ways I write my reviews is to create a list of what I enjoyed and didn’t about a book. I go through things like the technical aspects of the writing, the characterizations, the plot, and of course the romance between the main couple. Sadly, when I completed my list for What an Earl Wants I had far more things under my “Didn’t Like” column than I could balance against the things I did enjoy.

The story opens with Gideon Redgrave, the new Earl of Saltwood, arriving on the doorstep of Mrs. Jessica Linden to discuss his guardianship of her half-brother. Due to the presence of a few men and women gathered in her great room, Gideon immediately gets the impression that he’s walked into a bordello with “Mrs.” Linden being the madam of the establishment. Jessica’s half-hearted attempt at seducing Gideon does not help these perceptions, but somewhere in between the innuendoes both characters make very clear their positions about Gideon’s guardianship and Jessica’s intent to take it from him. Unfortunately the characters quickly forget about the guardianship issue when questions about Jessica’s father’s death sound suspiciously like events surrounding Gideon’s own father’s death years earlier. With too many coincidences linking them, Gideon and Jessica embark on an investigation into both men’s lives that uncover family secrets that possibly should never have been revealed.
