Loving an Ugly Beast (Fairy Tales & Ever Afters)

Loving an Ugly Beast - Danielle Monsch Loving an Ugly Beast should have been a better read for me. It had all of the elements to make it a very fun and enjoyable story, it’s an adaptation of my favorite fairy tale Beauty and the Beast and the author had some creative ideas to twist the story and make it unique from other retellings. Unfortunately what killed this book for me were the failures in execution that overwhelmed what should have been a charming story about loving a person’s real beauty.

Nissa and Benton are very good friends who both wish they could take their relationship to the next level but both fear rejection. Benton has issues about his appearance, bearing scars across his face and body that have led many in their village to nickname him The Beast. Nissa’s scars go much deeper than her skin, but she is just as fearful that their presence will change how Benton feels about her. When a woman claiming to be a Fairy Godmother appears to Benton she makes him the offer to change his appearance from Beast to Beauty in order to woo Nissa and create the happy ever after they both wish for in their hearts. However, in this fractured fairy tale, Benton’s new found handsomeness scares Nissa away from him and he must come to accept that the man she fell in love with was the Beast all along.
