Loving the Marquess (Landing a Lord 1)

Loving the Marquess - Suzanna Medeiros My thoughts on Loving the Marquess could go either way. On the one hand author Susanna Medeiros takes the standard Marriage of Convenience trope and adds a unique complication that really challenges the characters finding love. The story also has a mystery that puts both the hero and heroine in peril and further risks their happily ever after. On the other hand, the characters never seemed to live up to their potential for all of the set-up we are given and they fell more on the side of bland than vibrant to me. This was a fairly good read, but probably not one I would seek out to read again.

Having a handsome stranger knocking on your door and swooning at your feet could be the dream of any woman, yet for Louisa Evans the identity of her visitor might be a nightmare. The Evans family has been sent to live in poverty all due to the underhanded tactics of the Marquess of Oversea’s uncle and anyone bearing the last name of Manning hasn’t been welcome in their house for many years. When Nicholas Manning, the new Lord Oversea, comes crashing into her life Louisa is ready to put the handsome man out of her thoughts the minute he leaves her house, even though in a moment of weakness they share a kiss that stirs feelings that shouldn’t be felt for one’s enemy. Her confusion at her emotions is mixed with her compassion for the man who seems terribly ill one moment and then perfectly at ease the next. Unfortunately when the landlord on her small cottage, another Manning, comes to collect rents that Louisa cannot pay she is sickened by his alternate proposal to collecting on her debt. In a panic, Louisa runs to the only other Manning she knows for help, putting her faith in the man who could save her or ruin her.
